The media is rife with coverage of the alleged (I stress alleged) Mayan prediction that the world will in 2012. Personally I am sure that 99% of people do not take this seriously, however given we live in a world with 7 billion people, even 1% of that 7 billion would mean 70 million people, i.e. more people than there are in the whole of the United Kingdom for example.  A Reuters global poll claims that 1/10 of people are “anxious” over the end of the world.

“One in 10 of us is said to be anxious that 21 December marks the end of the world.”

So taking that in to account I shouldn’t have been shocked when a few weeks ago a relatively young person (not a teenager though but slightly older) asked if the world was going to end? To understand why they asked me this you have to be aware that in addition to writing, blogging and different business interests I also work as an English language teacher to sustain myself whilst I do the other things I have just mentioned. This person therefore saw me as some sort of figure of authority.

THE WORLD WILL NOT END IN 2 DAYS TIME.

The world will not end in 2 days time, not because Will Smith will be there to save as as he has done in Hollywood films, or because I am particularly clever or more enlightened than anyone else but for a number of different reasons, one of them being the fact that the Mayans never said the world would end. So let’s forget about Will Smith for a second and concentrate on the Mayans.

Ancient Mayan architecture.

Rigoberta Menchu, the 1992 winner of the Nobel peace prize. A Maya from Guatemala.

The Mayans were an ancient people and civilization from Central America, whose descendants are still alive in Mexico, Guatemala and other states who are famous for creating empires and states in central America, a distinct alphabet based on hieroglyphics as well as impressive architecture. 21st of December 2012 is merely the end of the current Mayan cycle or “bak’tun” of 144,000 days and this will be the end of the 13th bak’tun and the beginning of the 14th according to a California anthropology professor and expert on the Mayans, Rosalind Joyce.

So nothing to worry about folks.

So why is the title of my blog called “The world” will end on the 21st December 2012?

Because in a way it will. Another day of your life on this earth will finish, which you will never be able to regain, lost for ever. So in that sense the end of something. It can also be the “end” of the current “world” or life that you live in now and the chance to start a new beginning. Rather than look at the 21st of December as the end, look at it as the Mayans did as the beginning of a new era.

Thank you for reading.

Have a nice day.
